Tessa and Rachel, who I lived with in Simmons during freshman year, are in the ROTC program at MIT, and I myself got to know the program a little as their friend and as a friend of other ROTC members. Something interesting I realized at the end of fall semester was that actually, all the ROTC members I know personally are women, and they all find the program a fulfilling part of their MIT experience. I had not known about ROTC at all before I came to MIT (not even as something done at other schools), but after learning about it from my friends, I thought it would have been a great option for anyone adMITted who wanted to consider it (and now, a good number of you have been!) We hope to let you know a little more about the program through this blog post. Hi, I’m Tessa W. ‘18. I’m studying Chemical Engineering ( Course 10), and I’m an Air Force ROTC Cadet 3rd Class. ROTC is a really interesting program with a lot of cool opportunities (obviously, we’re a little biased), and we get a lot of questions about the program, typically on the days when we wear our uniforms. ROTC is an abbreviation for Reserve Officer Training Corps. It is a training program intended to train students as comissioned officers for the US Armed forces, based in colleges and universities. If you join the program, you participate in four years of ROTC in college (three if you join as a sophomore). When you enter the military (in our case, the Air Force) you enter as the lowest officer rank, instead of enlistingin other words, you would be in more of a leadership position than those who generally enlist in the military. Officers could be involved in all sorts of things, including positions that could be in your major at MIT or elsewherethe military has many research labs, designs cutting-edge technology, and invests both people and resources in cyber security. The general service commitment after ROTC is at least four years active duty, and then enough years in the reserve to total eight years. There are certain careers, like being a pilot, that have a longer service commitmen t because they require more job specific training. And, of course, you’re allowed to stay in longer if you want. There are dozens of schools with AFROTC (Air Force ROTC) detachments, but if you go to a school that doesn’t have their own detachment, you can still participate in ROTC at another school in the area. Harvard, Tufts, Wellesley, Suffolk, and Salem State all have crosstown agreements with MIT’s detachment, so we have several students in our detachment who actually go to other schools. There are many scholarship opportunities for ROTC cadets, but you don’t have to have a scholarship to enroll in the program. You can find a lot more information about that at afrotc.com/scholarships. 2) Do you actually have a ROTC class? Indeed we do. During freshman and sophomore year, we have one hour of class in a traditional classroom setting, and two hours of Leadership Laboratory (LLAB). In our regular class, which is called Aerospace Studies (AS for short) (it’s not actually about aerospace), we learn about the Air Force. The specifics change as you progress in the program. Freshman year you cover a lot of introductory material and basic information about the Air Force. Sophomore year is mostly Air Force history. Junior and senior year AS class is slightly longer, and you learn about how doctrine, strategy, and leadership fit together and you prepare for commissioning. LLAB has more hands-on activity, like drill (basic marching), team building exercises, and introductory combat skills. The goal of LLABs varies year to year: freshman year it’s learning, sophomore year it’s preparing for Field Training, and junior and senior year it’s practicing your leadership skills. Juniors and seniors are in charge o f actually planning and running LLABs.   When the weather is nice, we usually have LLAB outside. This was our second LLAB of the semester. 3) Do you have to do ROTC things over the summer? Yes and no. During your sophomore year, you apply for a slot to go to Field Training over the summer, which is about 4 weeks of boot-camp style training (more commonly known as “the best fun you never want to have again”). Every cadet has to successfully complete Field Training in order to commission. In addition, some cadets (depending on their scholarship status) spend two weeks on an Air Force base after freshman year, shadowing officers and getting a better idea of how the Air Force works. With these two exceptions, though, your breaks (Christmas, spring, summer, IAP) are all yours to fill with travel, internships, etc. On the other hand, there are many opportunities to do some cool things through ROTC. I (Rachel) was able to go Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan this summer for an 8-week Russian language immersion program through a program known as Project GO. The program is not limited to Russian, and many of the cadets at our detachment have been able to do similar programs completely fu nded by ROTC, studying strategic languages such as Russian, Korean, and Swahili. Besides the general excitement of studying abroad in a completely different location, this was a great experience for me since it can be difficult to fit in language classes at MIT with all of your technical classes and other humanities requirements. Though I’ve loved my Russian classes here, being around the language 24/7 is far more effective you tend to learn the target language really quickly when your host family doesn’t speak a word of English :) 4) So do you work out a lot? Kind of. We have Physical Training (PT) twice a week on Wednesday and Friday mornings at 0700 (7AM). It lasts an hour, and what we do varies from week to week and day to day. Crosstown cadets (cadets who go to another university but come to MIT for ROTC) and varsity athletes only have to come to one PT session every two weeks, but they have to submit a waiver and still work out outside of PT. To really stay in shape though, you have to work out more than twice a week, so we all work out on our own time as well. If you’re a high schooler applying for a scholarship, you’ll need to take a fitness assessment as part of your application, and if you receive a scholarship, you’re expected to pass a Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) each semester. Everyone in ROTC regardless of scholarship status still goes to PT and takes the PFA, so it’s in your best interests to get in and stay in shape. For the PFA, the goal is excellence, as our detachment consistently has one of the highest nat ional PFA averages. We were not fully prepared our freshman year, but we are doing much better now, so there’s always hope if you’re not in great shape when you start. We’re the reigning champions! (Tessa is kneeling at the bottom left and Rachel’s standing one from the right end!) 5) Do you guys ever have fun? Yes! Mandatory fun! But seriously, there are a lot of chances to relax with each other outside of class. We’ll go to the movies together, or walk the Freedom Trail as a group, or occasionally go paintballing. We actually just went paintballing a few weeks ago, and it was really fun. ROTC is something where you’ll get out of it what you put into it, so participating in everything you can is beneficial. This is also relevant to building relationships with fellow cadets because our detachment is on the smaller side, you get to know everyone pretty well when you hang out with the group. And LLAB is generally interesting and makes a nice change from regular academic classes. This picture is from when the 100s and 200s (freshmen and sophomores) walked the freedom trail together for a retention event (basically bonding). Our selfie game is strong. 6) Do you have any other cool AFROTC experiences? Actually, yes! Last year, the entire detachment was fortunate enough to get to ride on a KC-135 (a cool, military aerial refeuling aircraft) during a refueling mission. We took turns watching the refueling and sitting in the cockpit, and it was a really awesome experience. Cadets may also get the chance to ride in a fighter jet (typically an F-15 or F-16), and I (Rachel) did this last year over IAP. It’s way better than any roller coaster you’ve ever been on. On top of that, last spring break several cadets participated in the Israel Security Seminar and got to experience Israeli culture and learn about the challenges Israel faces. Thanks to MIT and other donors, they spent a week in Israel hiking, touring historical sites, and meeting with panels to discuss various military and cultural topics, for a fraction of what it would normally cost. She came to notice that her aunt had a responsibility to tend to theother children living with her. So as a result, Sophie began to help outaround the house, and take responsibility of aiding her aunt with the kids. This part of her personality would be known as the ego. She realized thatthe other children needed her aunt just as much as she did and she steppedback to allow her cousins to be well taken care of. After living in Haiti for so long, Sophie is told that she will bemoving to New York to live with a mother she never knew. When composing her book, Morrison used many different writing techniques to make it the best possible. One particular technique used throughout Beloved is symbolism. Symbolism is found in the number references used, nature and the characters portrayed. Many numbers used in Beloved are actually more than what they are written out to be. A common number used, is the address of Sethes home, 124 Bluestone Road. Their house, which use to be a railway station is located in the outskirts of Cincinnati, Ohio. The main character, Sethe had four children in her lifetime. Her house number indicates those four children, but leaves out the third born (being Beloved). Her remaining three children: Denver, Howard and Burglar are the ones resembled in the numeric address. Also in Beloved, single numbers like two, three and five show up in many different parts. The number two implies a unity (Livraghi). In this novel, two and four come up when Morrison relates to children and sex. Sex is usually viewed as in a couple, a pair of two (Elwell). When two people come together, they make a whole. With children, Baby Suggs had eight children; four girls and four boys (Morrison, 209). Seth had four children: two girls and two boys. Also, the number five appears in Beloved many times. There are five fingers on a hand. An outstretched, open hand is usually an offering or blessing (Adams), and when Morrison writes about the characters receiving aid or giving help, the number five usually shows up. However, like most businesses these days, there are always trials and tribulations. Important decisions must be made everyday, it is critical that quick thinking and a clearly defined method of operations management must be followed to keep things running smoothly. Of course, the true test to whether or not a solid operations management flow is in place is how the company is able to deal with the unexpected. This brief will examine who makes up FedEx’s complete customer base and how the company attempts to satisfy and retain its customers. As well, the risks taken in day to day business will be evaluated coupled with the manner FedEx is able to manage the chances it must often take. Another item for discussion is the impact of sudden demand for the industry and specifically for FedEx. Finally, FedEx’s top competitors will be studied, weighing strengths and weaknesses of each company. The risks There are many risks that one of FedEx’s packages not to arrive at its intended destination on time including unexpected volumes, weather, misrouting, and bottlenecks at customs. Luckily, FedEx has put into place the appropriate controls to prevent a delay of any package. As mentioned earlier, in efforts to prevent the loss of clients, FedEx has adopted policies and practices that have proven successful. To address the issue of unexpected volumes and weather problems, FedEx has built in quite a bit of redundancy into its systems. Its contingency planning is superior with proactive monitoring of weather and air traffic. As well, managers stay in close communication each day to plan, always staying one step ahead of the game. Additionally, FedEx actually has multiple hubs across the world in the case that packages need to be redirected. The automation of the sorting process keeps packages that are misrouted to a bare minimum. Packages that need special customs attention are also proactively reported to local authorities so there is minimal opportunity for those packages to slow the process. Even with these modern forms of automation in place, FedEx still prides itself on providing a human touch and treating each package as a â€Å"golden package†(FedEx Company Website 2005). Of course, if packages are delayed or do not ship to the accurate address, the company runs the risk of losing clients. Corporate clients can decide to take their contracts elsewhere and consumers will lose their feelings of loyalty if FedEx does not deliver the service it promised. FedEx’s philosophy of â€Å"Absolutely, Positively, Whatever it takes† (FedEx Company Website 2005) as discussed on its website is a direct reflection of what FedEx is willing to do to get the job done. In the unfortunate case where something goes awry with a package, FedEx also wants it customers to know there is a place to go for help and someone available at the end of the line to help work through issues. Indeed, FedEx offers many online tools to track packages as well as a phone number with live support staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year (FedEx Company Website 2005). The effects of sudden demand The effects of an unexpected and sudden demand increase can be challenging for any company. In not managed correctly, a myriad of problems can result in the express service industry. This is a direct result of the company not being able to inventory products when the demand arises (Melnyk Denzler 1996 p.447). Specific issues that can arise when sudden demand occurs include late shipments, incorrect shipments, bottlenecks, scheduling difficulties, cost increases, and capacity issues. Externally, late or incorrect shipments affect the customer relationship and have a negative impact on future business. Internally, bottlenecks can cause major issues in making shipment deadlines. In addition, without appropriate notice, staffing can be off and there can be inadequate human resources available to meet the unexpected demand. Directly, if staff needs to be scheduled at the last minute, there is a good chance that overtime wages will be required and costs can skyrocket. Finally, capacity issues are created by the unexpected demand and lack of equipment to actually transport the additional packages. To consider what type of threat each one of these competitors may pose to FedEx, it is important to review each of its competitor’s strengths and weaknesses as well as their market positions. UPS History The United Parcel Service (UPS) began in 1907 as the American Messenger Company and has continued to grow and flourish every since (UPS Company Website 2005). The company’s ability to continually reinvent themselves to fit the markets needs has kept them at the top of its game. Leadership Michael Eskew, the current Chairman and CEO for UPS, has been at the helm in his current post since 2003. Although relatively new in this leadership role, he has served with the company since 1972 as a faithful and forward thinking employee. Ninety percent of the company is owned by managers, employees, founders, and families. This ensures that those with a vested interested in the company are represented from the front lines to upper management (UPS Company Website 2005). From the start, DHL has committed itself to providing what it customers need. As early as the 1970s, the company realized that the globalization of trade was playing a key factor in the current business climate and adapted itself to be able to provide the services required for success in the international arena. Leadership Dr. Klaus Zumwinkel, current Chairman of the Board, is leading the way to establish DHL as a premier service with the highest quality at competitive prices (DHL Company Website 2005). Market Presence Ranked as the world leader in cross border express deliveries, DHL is spreading its wings to capture even more of the delivery services market. Since the beginning, Smith has positioned FedEx as the industry standard setter and has given all others a bar to reach for in terms of overall performance. Market Presence FedEx is the #1 express transportation company in the world and continues to grow and diversify. Its recent purchase of Kinko’s has helped to expand its retail presence as well as the supply chain management services it can provide to its customers. Potential for future growth FedEx has enjoyed exponential growth each year since the beginning and has always been able to manage the growth with ease. Last year alone, FedEx supported an 18.8% boost in sales and a jump in employees of 27.7% (Williams 2005). How does FedEx measure against the Competition? After review of FedEx and its main competitors, it is interesting to consider what may happen if one of its competitors would try to win clients from its customer base. Cleary, FedEx is a strong player in its field but the competition is fierce. In a competitive bid against its foes, FedEx would need to go on the offense, highlighting all of its attributes that make it stand out above and beyond. The best sales pitch is always a positive one, focusing on your company’s strengths rather than bad mouthing the competition. In an effort to keep important client relationships, FedEx could highlight the following: It’s original visionary and founder is still at the helm and directing the company that is still considered the industry standard setter. FedEx is the #1 express transportation company with sales revenue growth of 18.8% over last year, and net income growth 72.9% over last year (Williams 2005). FedEx’s commitment to do â€Å"Absolutely, Positively Whatever it takes† to keep the customer satisfied. It’s positive track record in the industry and ability to adapt to meet the growing needs of its client base (i.e. the purchase of Kinko’s). The commitment FedEx has to not only deliver on time but to treat each package like a â€Å"golden package†. In the case that questions arise regarding a delivery, there is always live support staff ready and available to field phone calls from consumers. Of course, packages can always be tracked on line. A competitive price offered for a competitive service with high quality standards. It appears that FedEx and UPS are both making plays to meet the end customer’s needs from both ends of the spectrum. FedEx got its start with the idea to guarantee delivery of overnight packages anywhere in the US. UPS, however, ramped up as a company focusing on ground deliveries. Both now are trying to get a piece of the other’s pie, and both are attempting to do it through acquisitions (DNS Retailing Today 2005, pp35-37).
